Alcoholism has a number of effects, both physically and psychologically. In this article we will discuss the psychological ones. A person that has an addiction to alcohol may suffer from anxiety, depression, self-pity, self-centeredness, paranoia and moral depravation. All of these can negatively impact not only the alcoholic but also those who love and care for them. Now, all of these won’t occur in everyone but many of them will. The only way to combat them is to get sober and stop drinking. Below, we will discuss some ways to do just that.
a. Rehab: Rehab is a great option for individuals that need help getting over their alcohol addiction. A counselor will be able to work side-by-side with an alcoholic and help them get clean. This is a very effective option and one that many people use to successfully get sober and stop drinking.
b. Self-help: Some people will attempt to get sober on their own. They may go cold turkey or follow a specialized program.
c. Support Groups: Support groups can be an effective way to help individuals get off of alcohol if their addiction is not severe or after they have gone through traditional rehab.
All of these options can be effective. How effective will depend on the individual. Not everyone will experience similar success and what works for one person may not work for another. It may take a bit of trial and error to determine which option is the best.
